The readmission agreement is not for Albanians
We underline: after attempts to speculate on the drama of the refugees
Berlin gives a ray of hope for Albanians who are residents of the former Yugoslavia and are in the country of the EU? The Prime Minister of the country said a week earlier, on the eve of the start of the meeting in Crete, stating that our government was asking the EU countries to reconsider their position toward those who belong to this category. The first signs are now emerging that that effort was not in vain. On Wednesday of this week, through a statement by the Swiss emigration statistics office (L'office federal de l'émigration), it was announced that the Swiss government, because of the situation created for the Albanians of the territories of the former Yugoslavia, has extended the validity of the residence permit in this country for another 6 months. In fact, this means the suspension of the expulsion of these citizens for an additional 6-month period from Switzerland.
The readmission agreement signed a few weeks ago between the two Albanian and Swiss governments applies only to individuals who will be subject to this agreement. For the sake of Albanians and refugees who are in the Swiss state or belong to countries where conflicts have broken out, in accordance with internationally established rules they cannot be subject to this agreement. (See Gani's words, head of the legal service, at the press office attached to the Albanian government, on page 6.) Any speculation made on the backs of these refugees is simply disgusting and has speculative aims. This is also the reason for changing the expiration date of the residence permit in the Swiss state for these refugees. According to officials of the Albanian government, this decision by the Swiss side has nothing to do with the Albanian government, but simply with the fact that Albania recently fell victim to unrest and its consequences were sufficient to affect even the structures of the administration. If we also take into account the war being fought these days in Kosovo, then we observe that the individuals belonging to this part of the conflict have been shaken. For this reason, the Swiss authorities have decided not to return them for a 6-month period.
